The Red blend comes from three blocks, Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 2001, Sangiovese and Malbec planted in 2017 on the farm in the Simonsberg- Stellenbosch ward. The soil here is a combination of decomposed granite and small bits of shale, imparting a mineral character to the wine. The 2021 vintage in Simonsberg-Stellenbosch experienced a moderate and consistent growing season. The weather was marked by warm, sunny days and cool nights, allowing for gradual ripening and a balanced acidity in the grapes at harvesting. The winemaking followed a hands-off approach to allow the grapes' natural characteristics to shine. After hand-harvesting, the different batches of grapes were vinified seperately. The grapes were crushed, destemmed and allowed to ferment spontaneously in 1-ton open top fermenters. Punchdowns were done three times a day until fermentation. After another 10 days on the skins the grapes were pressed and the wine was moved into barrels (French oak, 20% new). The wine spent a year in barrel, gaining complexity and texture.
Tasting Notes: On the nose, it opens with aromas of ripe blackberries and a hint of plum, complemented by subtle earthy notes. Cabernet Sauvignon's dark fruits provide a solid foundation, while Malbec adds a smooth, velvety texture and weight to the mid-palate. The Sangiovese, on the other hand, adds a bright freshness with notes of red cherries and a lively acidity.
